Sometimes nature makes the most incredible patterns without trying.
This print captures the fine, tangled structure of Usnea lichen, commonly known as beard lichen. Its delicate branching forms create an almost otherworldly pattern against the cyanotype background.
I only collect fallen lichen.
My approach is guided by a respect for the ngahere and the principle of taking only what can be gathered without unnecessarily disturbing what is living. Lichens are slow-growing organisms, and their growth can vary significantly depending on the species and environment, so fallen specimens are given a second life as artwork rather than being pulled from a living tree.
Each print is individually exposed and processed by hand, so subtle variations in texture, exposure and tone make every piece unique.
